Jefferson Capital Systems LLC v. Darrell J Doeing

Filed: Mar 18, 2026
Type: CS

What's This Case About?

Let’s cut right to the chase: a multi-million-dollar debt collection company from Minnesota is suing a guy in Canadian County, Oklahoma, for $1,296.98—less than the cost of a decent used lawnmower—and has filed three separate legal claims to do it. Three. Not because the stakes are high, not because a crime was committed, but because somewhere in the soulless machinery of America’s credit system, it became perfectly normal to drag a man named Darrell J. Doeing into court over a credit card balance that stopped getting paid in 2023. And yes, they even checked—Darrell is not in the military. We wouldn’t want to sue a soldier, now would we?

So who are these people? On one side, we’ve got Jefferson Capital Systems LLC, a debt buyer that specializes in purchasing old, unpaid accounts for pennies on the dollar and then suing to collect the full amount—plus interest, fees, and legal costs. They’re based in Minnesota, but their legal muscle comes from Faber and Brand L.L.C., a Missouri-based debt collection law firm that sues people like Darrell more times than Taylor Swift has written songs about exes. On the other side is Darrell J. Doeing, a Canadian County resident who, according to the court filing, opened a Mission Lane credit card back in November 2021. Mission Lane, by the way, isn’t a bank—it’s a fintech company that partners with Transportation Alliance Bank, Inc. (TAB Bank), which actually issued the card. Think of it like a tag team: TAB Bank fronts the credit, Mission Lane handles the customer service, and when things go south, the debt gets sold off to the vultures—er, debt buyers—like Jefferson Capital.

The story starts innocently enough. Darrell gets a credit card—probably not a platinum Amex, but something accessible, maybe even marketed to people rebuilding credit. He uses it. There are gas charges at a Shell in Yukon, groceries at Walmart, a quick bite at Wendy’s in Oklahoma City. Nothing extravagant. In fact, his last purchase was $28.19 worth of fast food on New Year’s Day 2024. Charming. He even made a payment—$30.99—on December 18, 2023. But after that? Radio silence. No more purchases. No more payments. Just silence and compounding interest.

By July 2024, the account is six months past due. The card company sends a statement—cold, clinical, terrifying in its calmness—showing a new balance of $1,296.98, all of it interest and prior charges, with no new activity. The interest rate? A cheerful 35.24% APR. That’s not a typo. That’s nearly a third of the balance being eaten alive by interest every year. The minimum payment due? A whopping $417.97—more than a third of the entire balance. It’s like being told to pay off your phone bill in one go or lose your service. The message is clear: we know you can’t pay this, but we’re going to ask anyway.

Fast forward to September 2025. TAB Bank, tired of waiting, sells Darrell’s debt—along with a whole “portfolio” of other forgotten accounts—to Mission Lane LLC in a bulk transaction. Then, just days later, Mission Lane flips that debt to Jefferson Capital Systems, the plaintiff in this case. It’s like a hot potato made of bad credit. And now, in March 2026, Jefferson Capital, armed with affidavits, assignment documents, and a sense of corporate righteousness, files a lawsuit in Canadian County District Court. They want their $1,296.98. Plus interest. Plus attorney fees. Plus court costs. Plus the emotional satisfaction of winning.

Why are they in court? Well, legally speaking, they’ve thrown the kitchen sink at Darrell. Count I is Breach of Contract—Darrell agreed to pay, he didn’t, so he broke the deal. Count II is Suit on Account, which is basically, “Hey, you owe us money, and here’s the bill.” And Count III? Quantum Meruit—a Latin phrase that means “you got something, so you should pay for it,” usually used when there’s no formal contract. Except here, there is a contract. So why all three? Because in debt collection law, if you’re gonna sue someone for $1,300, you might as well sue them thoroughly. It’s overkill, but it’s also a strategy: if one claim gets picked apart, the others might stick.

And what do they want? $1,296.98. That’s it. Less than $1,300. To put that in perspective, that’s about what you’d spend on a mid-range smartphone, or two months of car insurance, or a single month of rent in some parts of Oklahoma. But for a debt buyer? It’s profit. They likely paid maybe $200 for this account in the bulk sale. If they win, they pocket the difference—plus interest at 8.75% from the date of judgment. And attorney fees. And costs. All of it funneled through a legal system that treats small-dollar debt like a high-stakes game.

Now, here’s the absurd part: this entire case is built on paperwork generated by people who never met Darrell, never spoke to him, and likely never will. The affidavit comes from Vanessa Janssen, a “Custodian of Records” at Jefferson Capital, who swears under penalty of perjury that she “has personal knowledge” of Darrell’s debt… because she looked at a database. The transaction history is pulled from electronic records. The assignment of the debt is confirmed by a guy named David Bader at Mission Lane, who also swears he knows all this is true… because he works in “CIR Strategy & Analysis.” It’s like a legal version of The Office—a bureaucracy so detached from reality that someone in Virginia is testifying about a man’s credit habits in Oklahoma, based on data from a bank in Utah, sold by a company in Georgia, enforced by lawyers in Missouri, suing over a card branded by a company that doesn’t even issue cards.

Are we rooting for Darrell? Honestly, we’re rooting for the idea of him. The everyman who got caught in the credit machine. The guy who probably just needed gas and groceries, got hit with a high-interest card, missed a few payments, and now has a lawsuit that could ding his credit, lead to wage garnishment, or just add stress to an already stressful life. Is he blameless? Maybe not. But is this lawsuit necessary? Is it fair? When a corporation sues an individual over $1,300 and files three causes of action, checks military status like it’s a formality, and spends more on legal fees than the debt is worth—something’s broken. This isn’t justice. It’s debt theater. And the saddest part? Cases like this happen thousands of times a day across America. Darrell J. Doeing is just the one who landed on our docket. For now, he’s the face of the system. And the system? It’s working exactly as designed—just not for him.

About Interest Charges How We Calculate Interest. We calculate it separately for each Balance shown in the Interest Charge Calculation table. We use the daily balance method (including new transactions), which includes daily compounding of interest, to calculate interest on your Account. The Interest Charge Calculation Method applicable to your account for Cash Advances and Purchases of goods and services that you obtain through the use of your Account is specified on the front side of this statement and explained below: Method A - Daily Balance (including new cash advances). The Interest Charge on cash advances begins from the later of the Transaction Date or the first day of the Billing Cycle in which the transaction posts to your Account There is no grace period. Method B - Daily Balance (including new transactions). To avoid incurring additional Interest Charges on the balance of Purchases reflected on your monthly statement and, on any new appearing Purchases on your next monthly statement, you must pay the entire New Balance in full, shown on your monthly statement, on or before the Payment Due Date. We determine the Interest Charge for a billing cycle by multiplying the daily balance by its daily periodic rate each day in the billing period. To get a daily balance, we take the Balance at the end of the previous day, add new charges, subtract new credits or payments, and make adjustments. We then multiply the daily balance for each Balance each day by its daily periodic rate and add all amounts to get the daily balance to get the ending daily balance. The Balance Subject to Interest Rate is the average of the daily balances. For more information on how your daily balance (including new cash advances) is calculated, please refer to your Cardholder Agreement or call our Customer Service Department at (855) 790-8860. Minimum Interest Charge. If we charge interest, it will be at least $0.50. How to Avoid Paying Interest on Purchases. Your due date is at least 23 days after the close of each billing cycle. We will not charge you any interest on New Purchases if you pay your New Balance in full by the due date each month. New Purchases are Purchases that first appear on the next billing statement. Interest charges begin to accrue on New Purchases and Cash Advances from the later of the Transaction Date or the first day of the Billing Cycle in which the transaction posts to your Account and continue to accrue until you pay in full and will be billed in the next Billing Cycle. Interest Charge Calculation Methods (ICM) and Computation of Balance Subject to Interest Rate. The Interest Charge Calculation Method applicable to your account for Cash Advances and Credit Purchases of goods and services that you obtain through the use of your card is specified on the front side of this statement and explained below: Method A - Average Daily Balance (including new cash advances). The Interest Charge on cash advances begins from the date you obtained the cash advance, or the first day of the billing cycle in which it is posted to your account, whichever is later. There is no grace period. The Interest Charges for a billing cycle are computed by applying the Periodic Rate to the ‘average daily balance’ on your account (including new cash advances). For more information on how your average daily balance (including new cash advances) is calculated, please refer to your Cardholder Agreement or call our Customer Service Department at (855) 790-8660. Method G - Average Daily Balance (including new transactions). To avoid incurring additional Interest Charges on the balance of purchases reflected on your monthly statement and, on any new appearing purchases on your next monthly statement, you must pay the entire 'New Balance' in full, shown on your monthly statement, on or before the Payment Due Date. The Interest Charges for a billing cycle are computed by applying the Periodic Rate to the ‘average daily balance’ on your account (including new transactions). For more information on how your average daily balance (including new transactions) is calculated, please refer to your Cardholder Agreement or call our Customer Service Department at (855) 790-8660. Paying Interest: Your due date is at least 23 days after the close of each billing cycle. We will not charge you any interest on purchases if you pay your entire balance by the due date each month. We will begin charging interest on cash advances on the transaction date or the first day of the billing cycle in which the transaction is posted, whichever is later. Payment Crediting and Credit Balance. Payments received by SPM ET either electronically or by mail at the location specified on the front of the statement after the phrase 'Please Mail Your Payment To:' will be credited as of the date of receipt to the account specified on the payment coupon. Payments must be made in U.S. dollars. Payments that do not conform to the requirements set forth on or with the periodic statement (e.g. multiple checks or multiple coupons in the same envelope) may be subject to delay in crediting, but shall be credited within five days of receipt. If there is a credit balance due on your account, you may request, in writing, a full refund. Submit your request to the address indicated on the front of this statement after the phrase 'Please send Billing Inquiries and Correspondence to:'. If you ask someone else to make a payment on your behalf, we may be able to process that third-party payment. We also may refuse to accept that payment. If we do accept it, you’re responsible for the payment regardless of it being returned or rejected. You must not include any restrictive words, endorsements, conditions, limitations, covenants, or other special instructions such as Paid in Full on your payment or accompanying correspondence. If you include restrictive language, we may reject the payment and/or return it to you. We also may process the payment without losing any of your rights. Payments By Mail. By sending a check, you are authorizing the use of the information on the check to make a one-time electronic debit from the account on which the check is drawn. This electronic debit, which may be posted to the account as early as the date the check is received, will be only for the amount of the check. The original check will be destroyed and we will retain the image in our records. Payments Other Than By Mail. • Online. Go to www.missionlane.com to make or schedule a one-time payment. • Autopay. At any time, if your balance consists only of the Annual Membership Fee, or fees and interest resulting from the Annual Membership Fee, you may request to close your account, and we will forgive that balance. BILLING RIGHTS SUMMARY What To Do If You Think You Find A Mistake On Your Statement If you think there is an error on your statement, write to us at the address shown on the front of this billing statement after the phrase 'Please send Billing Inquiries...to.' In your letter, give us the following information: • Account Information: Your name and account number. • Dollar Amount: The dollar amount of the suspected error. • Description of Problem: If you think there is an error on your bill, describe what you believe is wrong and why you believe it is a mistake. You must contact us within 60 days after the error appeared on your statement. You must notify us of any potential errors in writing. You may call us, but if you do, we are not required to investigate any potential errors, and you may have to pay the amount in question. While we investigate whether or not there has been an error, the following are true: • We cannot try to collect the amount in question, or report you as delinquent on that amount. • The charge in question may remain on your statement, and we may continue to charge you interest on that amount. But, if we determine that we made a mistake, you will not have to pay the amount in question or any interest or other fees related to that amount. • While you do not have to pay the amount in question, you are responsible for the remainder of your balance. • We can apply any unpaid amount against your credit limit. Your Rights If You Are Dissatisfied With Your Credit Card Purchases If you are dissatisfied with the goods or services that you have purchased with your credit card, and you have tried in good faith to correct the problem with the merchant, you may have the right not to pay the remaining amount due on the purchase. To use this right, all of the following must be true: 1. The purchase must have been made in your home state or within 100 miles of your current mailing address, and the purchase price must have been more than $50. (Note: Neither of these are necessary if your purchase was based on an advertisement we mailed to you, or if we own the company that sold you the goods or services.) 2. You must have used your credit card for the purchase. Purchases made with cash advances from an ATM or with a check that accesses your credit card account do not qualify. 3. You must not yet have fully paid for the purchase. If all of the criteria above are met and you are still dissatisfied with the purchase, contact us in writing (or electronically) at the address shown on the front of this billing statement following the phrase 'Please send Billing Inquiries...to.' While we investigate the same rules apply to the disputed amount as discussed above. After we finish our investigation, we will tell you our decision. At that point, if we think you owe an amount and you do not pay, we may report you as delinquent.
